Fluids

Ferrofluid in Your Hand

A dish of black ferrofluid: bring a finger near and it rises into a field of sharp spikes that follow your finger.

Up to four fingers are four magnets: hold and drag them and the spikes follow. Tilt the device to pour the fluid.

The idea
Each finger is a magnet under the dish. The spikes are the real Rosensweig instability coming out of the simulated equations of a magnetic liquid layer, not a drawn pattern; you hear the magnet hum.
With music
It doesn't follow the music: it makes its own sounds, a magnet hum and the ticks of spikes forming. Tap Demo beat for our own beat, or Your music to let it hear the room.
How it runs
It’s the same live simulation as in the Everdust apps, running in your browser on WebGL 2. If your device struggles, it lowers the detail a step at a time to keep the motion smooth.

This is just a taste

The Everdust app has every world at full detail, plus games made of physics, stories you step inside, Create (turn any photo into a world), and hand tracking on Vision Pro and Quest. Free during the beta.
