Cosmos

Galaxy Collision

Two disk galaxies swing past each other: the first pass rips out long tidal tails and a bridge of stars, then the two cores fall back together.

Drag to turn it, pinch or scroll to zoom, double-tap to reset.

The idea
The classic Toomre & Toomre (1972) experiment that explained the Antennae galaxies: stars orbit two galactic cores and feel both of them, with 262,000 stars integrated live. Stars almost never collide; gravity does the work.
With music
Kicks set off a starburst flash where the tides are strongest; vocals make the stars glow; mids speed time up a little. Tap Demo beat for our own beat, or Your music to let it hear the room.
How it runs
It’s the same live simulation as in the Everdust apps, running in your browser on WebGL 2. If your device struggles, it lowers the detail a step at a time to keep the motion smooth.

This is just a taste

Loved Galaxy Collision? There are many more worlds in the app.

The Everdust app has every world at full detail, plus games made of physics, stories you step inside, Create (turn any photo into a world), and hand tracking on Vision Pro and Quest. Free during the beta.
